A summary of The 8th International Symposium of the Protein Society of Thailand

The Protein Society of Thailand (PST) conducted its 8th International Symposium from August 5th-7th, 2013. The meeting drew 220 registered participants, who participated in 12 invited lectures, 12 oral presentations selected from the abstracts and 3 company-sponsored luncheon lectures, in addition to the Annual Meeting of the PST, three poster sessions and the Opening Reception. The invited lectures from abroad included Prof. Zengyi Chang from Peking University, Beijing, China (President of the Asia Pacific Protein Association, APPA); Prof. Shih-Lin Chang, Director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, Hsinchu, Taiwan, China; Prof. Terence Poon from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China; and Prof. Richard Simpson, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. The Thai Invited Lectures emphasized the research of young and mid-career scientists, as part of the PST’s efforts to encourage outstanding young protein scientists.

Eighty-one posters were presented in the poster sessions, including 64 regular posters and 17 posters with proceedings. Aside from the lively exchange on protein science among the posters during the poster sessions, the protein scientists also perused and gathered information on new technologies at the many exhibits provided by the corporate sponsors. Much of the final day was dedicated to the workshop on disease proteomics, presentations by students selected for travel awards to the Asia Oceania Human Proteome Organization meeting in Japan in September, and finally the awards ceremony and traditional prize drawing. Throughout the meeting, a high level of scientific endeavor was discoursed in areas ranging from protein structures and new methods for direct phasing in protein crystallography to protein-protein interactions to applications and proteomic profiling.
